Description of the local area

Schull is a charming seaside village in West Cork, a region known the world over for its outstanding beauty. This is an ideal setting for those who wish to get away from the hustle and bustle of a hectic city life. Golfing, angling, hill-walking and water sports are all hugely popular in this coastal area. There is so much to do here you will be spoilt for choice, the outstanding beauty along with local interest and a rich history will have you totally captivated. Summertime offers many diversions for your holiday entertainment and enjoyment. Availing of the many watersporting activities, windsurfing, sailing dingies, kayaks or scuba diving.

The waters off our picturesque coastline are filled throughout the summertime with dolphins, seals, whales and sharks, or visit one of the islands. Ferries are available for tours around the islands or for those wishing to spend a day on Cape Clear, Sherkin and even over to Baltimore. A ferry will bring you and shuttle you back to Schull in the evening. There are a number of pony trekking facilities. Bicycles can be hired locally.

See and Do

There are plenty of walks and there are tennis courts, a squash court (at Schull Community College), a planetarium, a library and a children's playground.

Schull Planetarium, part of the local Community College, is the only Planetarium in the Republic of Ireland and provides a unique educational resource.

Garden enthusiasts

Look for the 'West Cork Garden Trail' brochure with details about area gardens which are available to the public.

Mizen Head Visitors Centre

You could visit the Mizen Head Visitors Centre, at the outstretched tip of the Mizen finger with its famous suspension bridge.

Arts and Crafts

Those interested in arts and crafts should stop at one of the Craft Centres locally and take advantage of the talents of the many excellent craftspeople in the area of West Cork.

Entertainment & Dining Out

Also a fine selection of pubs, restaurants and cafés wait to delight you in Schull and the surrounding villages. Everything from fine dining, bar-food to fish and chips with an evening of traditional music.

If you are in Schull in July, then the ‘Art in Schull’ Festival will be one of the highlights.
